Family Dentistry, Dental Care for Every Family Member

From your child's first tooth to specialized care for older adults, we support your family's oral health through every stage of life.

What Is Family Dentistry?

Family dentistry focuses on maintaining oral health through the different stages of life. Dental needs change over time: young children are developing healthy habits and permanent teeth, adults may need preventive or restorative care, and older adults may face concerns such as worn teeth, gum disease, missing teeth or existing dental work that needs maintenance.

Regular dental examinations allow the dentist to look for tooth decay, gum problems, changes in the bite, damaged restorations and other oral health concerns. Professional cleanings remove plaque and hardened tartar that cannot always be removed effectively at home.

How often someone should have an examination or cleaning is not the same for everyone. The Canadian Dental Association recommends that recall intervals be based on individual factors such as cavity risk, periodontal health, medical history and overall oral health.

Family Dental Care for Children

Early dental visits help children become familiar with the dental environment while allowing developing teeth to be monitored. The Canadian Dental Association recommends a dental assessment within six months after the first tooth appears, or by one year of age. Depending on a child’s risk of tooth decay, preventive care may include fluoride and dental sealants.

Care for Adults and Older Family Members

For adults, family dentistry may include examinations, dental hygiene, fillings, treatment for gum disease, crowns, root canal therapy and replacement of missing teeth when needed.

As patients get older, maintaining existing fillings, crowns, bridges, implants and natural teeth becomes increasingly important. The goal is not simply to treat problems as they occur, but to identify changes early and develop a long-term plan based on each person's needs.

Your Examination and Individual Treatment Plan

A family dental visit begins with understanding your concerns, dental history and current oral health.

The dentist examines the teeth, gums and existing restorations and determines whether further diagnostic information is needed. Rather than placing every patient on the same recall schedule, Morgan Heights Dental Centre states that its hygiene maintenance program is individualized. Some patients may be seen approximately every six months, while people with greater periodontal or oral-health needs may require more frequent maintenance.

This approach is consistent with Canadian Dental Association recommendations that continuing-care schedules should be based on individual risk.
